THE LAW OF ZAGORA

THE LAW OF ZAGORA

The Law of Zagora is a new play by author and director Ivan Leo Lemo, in which he continues to unravel the identity knots of the city of Split and its audience. After the hit plays Cabaret Splićanke and Split in Space, which sought the contemporary, urban pulse of our city and its citizens through the Split dialect and narrative mapping of Split neighborhoods, The Law of Zagora brings, in the so-called Vlach dialect, the love story of Ante and Anđelija. This is not a typical love story and, in many ways, defies the stereotypical view of these Split immigrants, known as Vlachs, who descended from the Dalmatian hinterland to Split in search of a better future. Their migration greatly influenced the growth and development of Split, enriching its identity and bringing some specificities and symptoms to it. There is a special focus on the character of Anđelija, portrayed in this production by six actresses representing six life periods. In a way, she is similar to Anđa, whose soul was breathed into by the giants of Croatian literature, Ivo Brešan and Miljenko Smoje. This is our tribute and gratitude to these bards and teachers. We have taken over their "dramatic relay" and brought that heroine Anđa into the digital age. Namely, the plot of The Law of Zagora covers the period from 1945 to the present day, up to 2023, so in addition to the intimate history of the characters, it also brings the socio-political history of these turbulent corners of ours. Through a melodramatic thread, comic but also tragicomic scenes of destinies familiar and unfamiliar to us all are interwoven, in which we can recognize and finally get to know our ancestors and ourselves. The ensemble of the City Youth Theatre, bolstered by guest actors, will reveal to you what happened behind some exciting family and historical circumstances. We will introduce you to some heroes and antiheroes who arrived at the sea with hoes and, we hope, as usual, amuse and entertain you.
